Pro-Doug Jones super PAC ad portrays Democrat as Second Amendment defender, Christian

A super PAC supporting Doug Jones is airing its first campaign ad backing the Democratic Senate candidate in a spot that plays up Jones' faith and support for the Second Amendment.

The super PAC, Highway 31, is based in Birmingham and officially filed with the Federal Election Commission on Nov. 6 -- three days before sexual misconduct allegations against Jones's Republican opponent, Roy Moore, first surfaced.

The roughly $150,000 ad buy, titled "Strong," is airing in Mobile, Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery.

The narrator introduces Jones as a "tough prosecutor" who successfully convicted the 16th Street Baptist Church bombers and Eric Rudolph. The spot also highlights Jones's background as a staffer to late Alabama Sen. Howell Heflin.

"Doug Jones. The son of a Fairfield, Alabama, steel worker. A strong defender of the Second Amendment. And a Christian whose faith guides his work. Doug Jones will be a senator we can be proud of," the narrator says.

While the ad makes no mention of Moore, the super PAC's executive director said in a statement that the race presents a clear contrast between the candidates.

"Doug Jones is a lifelong Alabamian, who after being appointed U.S. Attorney, worked to restore our state's good name when he finally brought the 16th Street bombers to justice," said Adam Muhlendorf. "As for Roy Moore, the headlines in Alabama in the recent weeks and months make it clear, he is not fit to serve in the U.S. Senate. "Doug Jones is a tough prosecutor, and in the Senate, he will fight for all Alabamians and the issues that we care about - jobs, the economy, a living wage, and ensuring that all children receive a first-class education regardless of where they live."

The special election between Jones and Moore is on Dec. 12. The contest will decide who will serve out the remainder of Jeff Sessions's term. Sessions vacated the seat to become President Donald Trump's attorney general.
